AGM: Saturday, September 23, 2023 Opening Remarks
All Inclusive Ministries (AIM) proudly continues its long history with the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. At the height of the AIDS crisis in the early to mid 1980s the Jesuits were the only priests in the Archdiocese of Toronto who openly ministered to our gay (the term commonly in use then) community. They ministered to our sick, and buried our dead. We will never forget this. We are always grateful. Since then, LGBTQ+ people have continued to gather at the Jesuit parish, Our Lady of Lourdes in downtown Toronto. From that time forward, on the 4th Saturday of every month, a Healing Mass for HIV/AIDS took place. In 2013, after a long period of discernment in response to changes in the LGBTQ+ community, for example new treatments for HIV/AIDS, the Healing Mass was modified. All Inclusive Ministries (AIM) at this point came in to breach the HIV Mass coming to an end. Like any renewal this was not without its challenges.
Since 2021, in complementarity with the Jesuits, the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) have committed to ministry with AIM. We are most happy to have them be part of our community; both to celebrate mass with us and preach, as per their well deserved name.
AIM is a place where LGBTQ+ people gather. AIM looks to focus on matters related to faith, and spiritual development, for example our monthly Gospel Reflection. The 4th Saturday of the Month Mass is the focal point of AIM’s existence. The Eucharist, the mass, defines us: it makes us different, a discrete, gay Roman Catholic group. From our members came an insistence that the ‘healing’ part of the HIV Mass be retained. This is honoured by AIM having two healing masses a year, the pink masses, one in Advent, Gaudete, the other in Lent, Laetare.
As a gathering place, AIM seeks fuller participation in the life of the Church. In Addition to the 4th Saturday of the Month Mass, we offer AIM Movie, AIM Book, AIM Musings.
We also acknowledge the Archdiocese of Toronto. We look forward to continued dialogue with them.
