The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has stated that a same-sex union cannot receive the sacramental of a church blessing. As committed Catholics, the members of All Inclusive Ministries (AIM) receive the statement with respect. It offers nothing new on the Church’s teaching on the sacrament of matrimony. Cardinal Cupich of Chicago reminds us that the declaration “needs to be read in the context of the teachings in the Catechism and the encouraging statements of Pope Francis to LGBTQ persons about their relationship to the church, as well as his urging that pastors welcome them with respect and sensitivity, recognizing, as the Congregation’s response does, the many positive elements in same-sex relationships, ‘which are in themselves to be valued and appreciated’” (Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, on Same Sex Unions).
AIM of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish remains a place of welcome for LGBTQ+ Catholics. We seek to grow in our love of God and our neighbour. Many members of AIM are partnered, and they know from their experience that God blesses their union. They are surrounded by family and friends who pray for God’s grace on their LGBTQ+ loved ones.
We understand that many people are hurt, even heart-broken, by this declaration. We hope that they will not give in to despair. Lent leads to Easter when Christ’s Resurrection reverses the old patterns of casting-out and blame. “Wait for the Lord and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land” (Ps 37:34).
