As a gay Roman Catholic, I would like to address an alarming issue: hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community. Hate speech is a catalyst for violence and discrimination, leading to tragic incidents. O’Shae Sibley, a gay man, was murdered. His life was taken due to a vicious attack fuelled by homophobia. The following explores the dangerous consequences of hate speech. It emphasizes the need for unity, compassion, and acceptance within the Roman Catholic community and society.

The murder of O’Shae Sibley shows the devastating impact hate speech can have on the LGBTQ+ community. While getting gas in Brooklyn, Sibley was dancing, vogueing, to Beyoncé’s Renaissance, which was playing in his car, when a group of men verbally accosted him and his friends. This verbal assault quickly escalated into physical violence. One attacker fatally stabbed Sibley.
